Most lamps light for a few seconds when you power the car on. That check is not a fault by itself. This page does not replace the owner’s manual for your model year and market.
What it means
The (P) lamp is the electric parking brake indicator. A steady lamp means the parking brake is applied. It flashes while the brake is engaging or releasing, then stays on once the car confirms it is held. The lamp should be off before you drive. A lamp that keeps flashing, or a message asking you to check the parking brake, is a fault rather than a normal applied state.
What to do
With your foot on the service brake, release the parking brake or select a gear and wait until the lamp goes out before you move. If it will not release, or it keeps flashing, do not force the car to roll. Leave it secured and have the parking brake checked.

- Do not drive off. A lamp that keeps flashing means the parking brake did not finish applying or releasing. Secure the car and have the system checked.
