Change the BYD Atto 3 language

This page is about the language of the large center screen on an Atto 3, the export name for the Yuan Plus. The instrument cluster behind the wheel is a different display, and these steps do not claim to change it. Do this while the car is parked. The steps name the job of each control. They do not quote a menu path as if every software build printed the same words.

This page does not replace the owner’s manual for your model year and market.

Which cars this covers

Published text of a 2022 Atto 3 owner’s handbook says the center screen can be set to Simplified Chinese or English from the infotainment settings. The archived page names a DiLink group, then a “more” entry, then language. That is one book’s wording for that car, not a map of every Atto 3 built since. Later export software can list more languages, and the words move. Public firmware notes put the Yuan Plus / Atto 3 family on more than one DiLink generation, so this page will not assign your car a version number. The version string on your own system screen is the one that counts. A gray-import Yuan Plus often still has the China software image, and on that image the language list may be missing or may offer only Chinese.

Video of this screen

BYD Atto 3 Change Menu LANGUAGE. Filmed by Service Reset My Car.

The clip shows one Atto 3 center screen with a language list open. It was filmed by Service Reset My Car. The labels in the clip are that car’s software, not a template for every year.

Steps

  1. 01

Park and wake the center screen

Put the car in Park and bring the center screen up. Stay parked. The screen can restart when the language changes, and you do not want that to happen in traffic. The small display in front of the driver is not the screen this step opens.

  2. 02

Open settings, and stop if the words do not match

Open the settings area of the center screen. In the 2022 handbook mentioned above, the language control sits in the infotainment settings. Your screen may use other words, icons, or a different order. If nothing on the screen matches a language control, stop. Guessing through labels you cannot read is how a setting you did not mean to change gets changed.

  3. 03

Choose the display language if a list is there

Look for the control whose job is the language of the menus. Where a list exists, early export handbooks name Simplified Chinese and English. Later updates in some markets add more. Choose the language and confirm if the screen asks. Wait if the display goes blank and comes back. The center screen should redraw in the language you chose.

  4. 04

Check the cluster and the voice assistant separately

Read a line on the instrument cluster, and try the voice assistant if you use it. Owners of the Yuan Plus / Atto 3 report that the cluster can stay in Chinese after the center screen has changed, often with no separate cluster control in the menu. Spoken prompts are frequently their own download. A car built for China may offer only Chinese speech even after the menus are in another language.

  5. 05

If there is no list, stop looking

A missing list usually means the installed software does not contain the language, not that the entry is hidden further down. That is typical of a gray import. A phone camera can translate the characters that are already on the screen. It cannot add a language pack. Use the problems below.

When the menu will not change

A gray import whose menu is only in Chinese

China-market software often has no export language pack in the menu. The practical route is a dealer, or a workshop that can apply a manufacturer-supported update for that VIN. An over-the-air update is not a promise. Cars built for China frequently cannot receive the export-market update service, and a car that was given an unofficial software image can lose the official channel it used to have. Do not copy a firmware package from a forum onto a USB stick. Packages are split by DiLink generation and region, and a mismatch is a known way to leave the screen black.

An update might add languages, and it might not

On an official export car, a later official update sometimes adds menu languages. The notes for your market are the evidence. A gray import should not be expected to receive that same package over the air. Ask the dealer, with the VIN, whether this car is eligible. If they cannot see it on the export update service, waiting will not grow the menu.

A factory reset puts the old language back

Resetting the center screen returns the default language of the software image that is installed. If that image is the China build, Chinese returns. The way back is the same language control, if the image has one, or the dealer route if it does not.

The center screen changed and the cluster did not

They are separate displays. This page does not invent a second procedure for the cluster, because many Atto 3 owners never get a cluster language control. Voice prompts, when another language is allowed, are changed in the assistant’s own settings and may need a download on Wi-Fi.

Common questions

Does changing the Atto 3 language also change the driver display?

Not reliably. These steps cover the center screen. The cluster can stay in Chinese, and there is often no menu entry for it.

The car was imported from China and every menu is Chinese. Can settings fix that?

Only if a language list is actually there. If the list is missing, settings will not invent it. You need a supported software update for that car, usually through a dealer, and a China-spec car may not be eligible for the export update.

Will my screen use the same labels as the video?

Do not count on it. The video is one Atto 3 and one software build. Use it to see what a language list looks like on that screen, then match the job of the control on yours.
