Powertrain fault

Most lamps light for a few seconds when you power the car on. That check is not a fault by itself. This page does not replace the owner’s manual for your model year and market.
What it means
This lamp means the electric drive system has a fault. It also runs a self-check and should not stay on after the car powers up. If it is still on, or it appears while driving, a monitored part of the powertrain is not healthy. The car may keep moving with less response, or it may ask you to stop.
What to do
Do not treat it as a normal driving lamp. Pull over when you can do so safely and have the powertrain checked before a longer trip. If power drops at the same time, read the limited-power lamp as well and avoid hard acceleration.

Common questions
- The car still moves. Can I ignore the lamp?
- No. The manual’s caution is to avoid driving while it is on and to have the fault checked. Continuing can leave you with less power, or with a shutdown, away from help.
- It was on for a second at start-up and then went out.
- A short self-check is normal. The fault is a lamp that stays on after that check or comes back on the road.
